Definition
What is blackwork?
Blackwork is a tattoo style that uses heavily saturated black ink — and only black — to build bold, graphic compositions. It ranges from minimal geometric pieces to massive solid-black surfaces (blackout).
Blackwork borrows from tribal, ornamental, geometric and illustrative traditions. The contrast is maximal, and the pieces tend to age very well because the heavy ink saturation holds up over time.
Examples
- Ornamental mandala sleeves in solid black
- Blackout forearms with negative-space designs
- Bold tribal armbands and chest pieces
