Definition
What is freehand tattooing?
Freehand tattooing is the practice of drawing the design directly onto the skin, without a paper stencil. The artist uses skin markers to sketch the composition before tattooing.
Freehand is often preferred for pieces that must follow the body's anatomy — ornamental sleeves, mandala chest pieces, or wraps around curved surfaces. It requires strong drawing skills and deep knowledge of body mechanics.
Examples
- Ornamental sleeve designed directly on the arm
- Flow-aware ribs or hip pieces
- Custom black-and-grey portraits adapted to skin curvature
