Definition
What is linework?
Linework refers to the clean outlines that form the structural backbone of a tattoo. Whether thin and delicate or bold and traditional, strong linework defines the composition and ensures the tattoo stays readable as it ages.
Many styles, from fineline to traditional American, rely heavily on precise linework. Artists often specialise in either fine lines (single-needle) or bolder outlines (grouped needles).
Examples
- Single-needle botanicals with hair-thin outlines
- Bold outlines of old-school roses or swallows
- Geometric mandalas built purely from lines
