What is a negative-space tattoo?

Negative space refers to areas of skin intentionally left untattooed, which form part of the final image through contrast with surrounding ink. It's often used inside blackwork or ornamental compositions.

Negative-space designs reward planning — the composition must read clearly at a glance. They age well and have a graphic, almost architectural feel.

Examples

  • White-outline geometric shapes inside a blackout
  • A moon carved out of a solid black circle
  • Ornamental mandalas with untattooed star centres
