What is a side-piece tattoo?

A side piece is a tattoo running along the side of the torso, from underarm down to the hip. It's one of the most flow-oriented placements and often designed freehand.

Side pieces are known for being painful due to thin skin over ribs. Healing also requires care because of clothing friction.

Examples

  • Ornamental side piece following the ribs
  • Japanese dragon wrapping from chest to hip
  • Script lettering running down the ribs
