What is watercolor tattoo?

Watercolor is a tattoo style that mimics the look of watercolour painting: soft colour washes, apparent splatters and minimal or no visible outlines. The result feels loose, painterly and airy.

Pure watercolour tattoos are controversial among old-school tattooers because they often lack anchoring linework and may age less predictably. Many modern artists combine watercolour with a subtle linework or fineline structure to improve longevity.

Examples

  • A bird in flight with trailing colour splatters
  • A floral composition in pastel washes
  • An abstract background behind a fine-line subject
