What is a cover-up tattoo?

A cover-up is a new tattoo designed to conceal an older one. It relies on darker, more saturated ink and a composition cleverly built on top of the existing design's shape.

Successful cover-ups often use blackwork, realism or neo-traditional styles. Laser removal sessions beforehand can help lighten the original to give the artist more freedom.

Examples

  • A dark floral cover hiding an old tribal armband
  • A blackout rectangle covering unwanted text
  • A realistic portrait covering an outdated symbol
